Denmark’s Eriksen collapses during Ukraine friendly

Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, five years after he suffered a cardiac arrest during the European Championships.

“Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances,” the Danish Football Association wrote on social media after the midfielder collapsed during Denmark’s international match.

The 34-year-old has played with a pacemaker since suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s clash with Finland at Euro 2020, a shocking incident that occurred in 2021 and kept him away from football for more than six months.

On Sunday, Eriksen suddenly fell to the ground in the 64th minute, with Denmark leading 2-1. Medical staff immediately rushed onto the pitch to assist the midfielder, and the match was eventually abandoned around 15 minutes later.

The former Manchester United star was taken to a hospital in Odense, where further tests were carried out. Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen later confirmed that Eriksen had been briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness quickly and was able to leave the pitch on his own.

“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself,” Boesen said. “The pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly. He will now undergo further examinations to determine what caused the incident.”
