Gyokeres’ past success proves his harshest judge at Arsenal

Viktor Gyokeres takes centre stage in the tie between Sporting CP and Arsenal. The Swedish forward, now at the Gunners, faces his former club after an acrimonious departure. Following a dominant spell in Lisbon, his big leap to the elite has come at a price, with his London statistics a stark contrast to his prolific output in Portugal.

The Champions League quarter-finals kick off this Tuesday. All eyes will undoubtedly fall on the blockbuster ties: Real Madrid against Bayern Munich, PSG facing Liverpool, and Barcelona taking on Atletico Madrid. The least high-profile encounter, however, pits Sporting Lisbon against Arsenal. The English side, currently leading the Premier League, stand as strong favourites to reach the semi-finals, and perhaps this perceived disparity in quality makes the tie seem less glamorous.

While less spectacular on paper than the other fixtures, this tie offers a significant subplot: the return to Lisbon of Viktor Gyokeres. After emerging as a global star at the Jose Alvalade, he has struggled immensely with the huge leap from the Portuguese League to a European giant in the Premier League last summer.

Following his acrimonious departure from Sporting, the Swedish forward has endured a torrid year of adaptation in London. His performance has remained a far cry from what he showed in Portugal, and this, coupled with Arsenal’s hefty outlay of almost €66 million for his services, has made him a target for criticism from the outset.

A stark decline: From 1.23 G/A per game to 0.44

Comparisons are often odious, but in Gyokeres’ case, the contrast is particularly stark. The Swede has gone from scoring almost at will in Lisbon to having to sweat blood to celebrate a goal with the Gunners. During his two seasons at Sporting, the forward notched a staggering 97 goals in 102 matches – an average of 0.95 per game.

This already impressive tally gains even greater significance when we factor in his assists. Gyokeres provided 28 during his time with the Lisbon club, boosting his total offensive contribution to 125. In other words, the attacker directly contributed to a goal during his spell in Portugal at a rate of 1.23 goal contributions per game. This remarkable record put him firmly in the shop window and prompted Arsenal to invest heavily in him, though it has yet to pay dividends.

In London, Gyokeres appears not to have fully integrated into Mikel Arteta’s tactical setup and playing system. From an outsider’s perspective, the Swede has often looked uncomfortable, disconnected, and at times clumsy on the ball. This sentiment has translated into poor numbers for a forward of his calibre: he has managed just 17 goals and 2 assists in 43 appearances for Arsenal, contributing to only 0.44 goals or assists per game since his arrival in England.

Gyokeres finds form as Arsenal falter

Against this backdrop, and facing his past, Gyokeres will aim to reassert himself as a truly elite striker in the stadium where he shone brightest. Individually, the match arrives during one of the forward’s best spells of the season; he has scored 5 goals in his last 3 appearances for club and country, including a hat-trick against Ukraine, a goal and a World Cup assist against Poland, and a strike in Arsenal’s recent clash against Southampton.

However, his small upturn in form has coincided with one of the Gunners lowest points this season. The London side recently exited two competitions in their last two matches, first losing 0-2 to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final, then suffering a 2-1 defeat to modest Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

These two stumbles, despite their significant lead in the Premier League and an ostensibly winnable European tie, already spark fears of the worst for an Arsenal side that has, in recent years, accustomed everyone to faltering at the crunch moments. The Lisbon clash will serve to gauge the Gunners true mettle and, in doing so, offer Gyokeres a chance to leave the ghosts of the past behind and revive his not-so-distant glories.
