24 fewer goal contributions: Gyokeres fails to fire in London

Viktor Gyokeres’ switch from Sporting Lisbon to Arsenal has so far proven a step too far, with the Swedish striker registering 24 fewer goal contributions after 24 matches compared to his previous campaign.

After two prolific seasons in Portugal, Gyokeres emerged as one of the most sought-after forwards in last summer’s transfer window.

Having excelled in a smaller league, he eyed a breakthrough in one of Europe’s elite competitions. Arsenal ultimately won the battle for his signature, paying a reported €66 million to bring the striker to the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta welcomed Gyokeres as the long-awaited pure number nine to complete his attacking setup, and expectations soared. Yet, halfway through the season, it is clear that the Swede has struggled to adapt to the Premier League’s intensity.

Gyokeres has appeared in 24 competitive matches this term, but his attacking output has fallen dramatically. He has scored just seven goals, including two penalties, and has yet to register a single assist.

By contrast, after 24 appearances last season with Sporting, he had amassed an astonishing 26 goals and five assists – a total of 31 goal contributions, 24 more than he has managed at Arsenal.

The gulf in productivity highlights the challenge of transitioning from the Portuguese league to the Premier League. Fierce competition, faster tempo and tactical demands have seemingly curtailed the Swede’s influence.

Despite these struggles, Arteta continues to back him, but patience may be tested if the striker fails to rediscover his scoring touch in the second half of the season.

The Emirates faithful will be hoping the 27-year-old can eventually replicate the prolific form that once made him a sensation in Lisbon.
