Everton were reduced to ten men early in their match against Manchester United on Monday after Idrissa Gueye was dismissed for striking Michael Keane, his own teammate.
Monday saw one of the most bizarre red cards in recent Premier League history. Gueye was shown a straight red following an altercation with Keane, which erupted after a Manchester United attack.
With the ball out of play, the Everton midfielder began arguing with his teammate, escalating to the point where goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had to step in and separate them.
During the confrontation, Gueye slapped Keane—an action immediately spotted by the referee and confirmed via VAR.
Keane appeared stunned and remonstrated with Gueye, seemingly questioning his teammate’s sanity. Meanwhile, Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye escorted a visibly distraught midfielder off the pitch at Old Trafford.
