Club World Cup group stage closes: Who’s through and what’s needed to qualify

The Club World Cup group stage is set to come to an end. With Groups A and B already finalised, the final matchday is stirring up plenty of excitement. Here at BeSoccer, we’ve put together a calculator showing what each team needs to do to make it through to the last 16.

The Club World Cup began its third and final day of the group stage on Monday, 23 June. With eight teams already through, there are still eight places up for grabs in the last 16. At BeSoccer, we take a closer look at each group’s situation and what every team needs to do to progress to the knockout stage.

Group A

River Plate (1st, 4 points, +2)

  • Will top the group if: they win or draw and Monterrey fail to win.
  • Will finish second if: they draw 1-1 and Monterrey win 1-0 or 2-0.
  • Eliminated if: they lose and Monterrey win, draw 0-0 and Monterrey win, or draw 1-1 and Monterrey win by three or two goals with at least three goals scored.

Inter Milan (2nd, 4 points, +1)

  • Will top the group if: they win, draw 0-0 and Monterrey slip up, win 1-0, or draw 1-1 or more and Monterrey win.
  • Will finish second if: they draw and Monterrey fail to win, or draw 0-0 and Monterrey win by more than two goals or by one goal, scoring at least three goals.
  • Eliminated if: they lose and Monterrey win.

Monterrey (3rd, 2 points, 0 goal difference)

  • Will top the group if: they win by two or more goals and Inter Milan and River draw 0-0.
  • Will finish second if: they win by three or more goals and Inter Milan and River draw 1-1, or if they win by two goals but finish with more goals scored than River.
  • Eliminated if: they lose, draw, or win and Inter Milan and River draw 2-2 or higher scoring.

Urawa Reds (4th, 0 points, -3)

  • Already eliminated.

Group F
Fluminense (1st, 4 points, +2)

  • Will top the group if: they win and Borussia Dortmund slip up, or even if Dortmund win, finish with a better goal difference. Also, with a draw if the Germans fail to win.
  • Will finish second if: they win but Borussia also win and Dortmund have better goal difference, draw and Dortmund win, or lose but Dortmund also lose and Fluminense finish with a better or equal goal difference and more goals scored.
  • Eliminated if: they lose and Dortmund earn points, or Dortmund finish with better or equal goal difference and more goals scored.

Borussia Dortmund (2nd, 4 points, +1)

  • Will top the group if: they win and Fluminense slip up or, even if they win, finish with better goal difference.
  • Will finish second if: they win but Fluminense also win and Fluminense finish with better goal difference, or if they draw or lose and Fluminense also draw or lose but Borussia finish with better or equal goal difference and more goals scored.
  • Eliminated if: they lose, Mamelodi Sundowns win and their goal difference relative to Fluminense is negative, or if tied, Borussia have fewer goals scored.

Mamelodi Sundowns (3rd, 3 points, 0 goal difference)

  • Will top the group if: they win and Borussia Dortmund slip up.
  • Will finish second if: they win and Dortmund also win.
  • Eliminated if: they lose or draw.

Ulsan Hyundai (4th, 0 points, -3)

  • Already eliminated.

Group G
Juventus (1st, 6 points, +8)

  • Will top the group if: they win or draw.
  • Will finish second if: they lose.

Manchester City (2nd, 6 points, +8)

  • Will top the group if: they win.
  • Will finish second if: they draw or lose.

Wydad Casablanca (3rd, 0 points, -5)

  • Already eliminated.

Al-Ain (4th, 0 points, -11)

  • Already eliminated.

Group H
Real Madrid (1st, 4 points, +2)

  • Will top the group if: they win, draw with goals, or draw 0-0 and Al-Hilal fail to win or win narrowly (1-0 or 2-0).
  • Will finish second if: they lose and Al-Hilal fail to win, or draw 0-0 and Al-Hilal win by more than three goals or by two goals if the score is 3-1 or higher.
  • Eliminated if: they lose and Al-Hilal win.

Salzburg (2nd, 4 points, +1)

  • Will top the group if: they win.
  • Will finish second if: they lose and Al-Hilal fail to win, draw, and Al-Hilal do not win, or in a 1-1 draw where Al-Hilal do not win by a score other than 1-0 (2-1 would involve fair play considerations).
  • Eliminated if: they lose and Al-Hilal win, draw 0-0 and Al-Hilal win, or draw 1-1 and Al-Hilal win narrowly from 3-2 or by a larger margin (2-1 would require fair play review).

Al-Hilal (3rd, 2 points, 0 goal difference)

  • Will top the group if: they win by three goals or by two goals starting from 3-1 and Real Madrid and Salzburg draw 0-0.
  • Will finish second if: they win and either Real Madrid or Salzburg win, if they win narrowly or 2-0 and the other match finishes 0-0, or if they win and Real Madrid and Salzburg draw 1-1.
  • Eliminated if: they lose, draw, or win and Real Madrid and Salzburg draw 2-2 or higher scoring.

Pachuca (4th, 0 points, -3)

  • Already eliminated.
