West Ham face challenges in Gomes deal amid financial constraints

According to The Guardian, West Ham United are facing challenges in their efforts to sign Lille star Angel Gomes, despite offering the Lille midfielder a £100,000-a-week contract.

The 23-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Barcelona, is reportedly seeking a higher wage than what West Ham have proposed. This has left the deal in limbo, with sources suggesting that an agreement may be difficult to reach.

Manager Graham Potter is eager to improve his midfield, and Gomes is one of the players he has identified as a key target. However, the London club’s financial situation is a concern. The club must reduce its wage bill to remain compliant with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability regulations, which could complicate the move for the English midfielder.

If the talks fall through, the Hammers will need to look at alternative targets for their midfield. Along with Gomes, West Ham have also shown interest in Lille striker Jonathan David, although discussions with the Canadian forward have not progressed as expected.

With Graham Potter looking to reshape the squad, the club will focus on offloading players such as Konstantinos Mavropanos, Emerson Palmieri, Guido Rodriguez and Niclas Fullkrug to raise funds.
