Branthwaite says Euro 2024 omission motivated him to push for England recall

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has revealed that missing out on a spot in England’s squad for last summer’s European Championship gave him the “motivation” to push himself harder in pursuit of future international recognition.

Branthwaite’s surprise omission from the Three Lions squad left him watching from home as England made it to the final, only to be narrowly defeated by Spain. However, the experience has driven the young defender to ensure he doesn’t miss out again.

“I think every player has an eye on the next tournament,” Branthwaite told BBC Sport. “I missed out on a big squad recently, and I don’t want to feel that again. It motivated me to make sure that every game I play is my best, to help my club and to give myself the best chance to be in the England squad.”

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Branthwaite has set his sights firmly on earning a place in the national team, stating: “That is my main ambition – to be picked for that squad.”

As new England manager Thomas Tuchel prepares to announce his first squad for the qualifiers, the English defender confirmed that he has already been in contact with the German coach, including video calls and messages, adding: “It’s nice to have that connection and to know he is watching you play and providing feedback on how you’re doing.”
