Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso wants to sign out of favour Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton on loan.

Morton, who graduated from Liverpool’s youth academy, made his senior debut during the 2021-22 season, but has only made eight appearances for the club since then. He spent the last two seasons on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, respectively. In the 2023-24 campaign, the midfielder had a fruitful season with the Tigers as he appeared in 41 matches across all competitions, scoring twice and providing five assists.

Morton’s impressive outing in the Championship caught the eye of Bayer Leverkusen manager Alonso, who has expressed his desire to bring in the 21-year-old on loan to the Bundesliga champions, according to The Times. The Reds had previously valued their youth player at £20 million (€23m/$26m) and it now remains to be seen if they are willing to let the youngster leave on a temporary deal.

The former Hull City star did appear for the Merseyside club in their pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2024-25 campaign and it seemed like he was part of new coach Arne Slot’s plans, however, there are several players in their squad at the moment who still sit above him in the midfield pecking order.

Along with Leverkusen’s interest, Morton is also wanted by another Bundesliga club RB Leipzig. It remains to be seen if the Premier League club agree to release the player before the summer transfer window closes on Friday.
