With Manchester City’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the postponed match of the 34th Premier League matchday, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa confirmed their mathematical access to the Champions League.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa will play in the Champions League for the first time in 41 years as they sealed fourth place in the Premier League after Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Villans have not played in the top continental competition since 1983, when they contested it, as champions of the tournament, by lifting the trophy a year earlier against Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.

Villa, with 68 points, are already assured of fourth place, as Tottenham, having lost 2-0 to City, remain in fifth with 63 points and a game in hand. Emery’s side’s final game of the season will be against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

This will be Emery’s Villa’s second European journey after he led them out of the relegation battle last season and into the Conference League, where they lost in the semi-finals to Olympiacos.
