According to a UEFA report, Manchester United’s 2023 squad was one of the most expensive in football history as the English club spent £1.21bn (1.42bn euros) in combined transfer fees.
The European Club Finance and Investment Landscape published a report on Wednesday with all the expenses of European clubs in the year 2023, i.e. last year. UEFA’s Intelligence Centre explorers have analysed everything from public costs to the cost of each player in a team.
Manchester United were the most expensive squad in history in 2023 when combining transfer fees for all players. Erik ten Hag’s squad included Antony (£82m), Casemiro (£70m) , Harry Maguire (£80m) and Jadon Sancho (£73m), among others.
The Red Devils finished third in the Premier League table last campaign, which was the Dutch manager’s first at Old Trafford. However, the transfers of Rasmus Hojlund (£72m), Mason Mount (£55m) and Andre Onana (£47m) are not included in the list as they joined in the summer transfer window.
The same report claims that other squads such as Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City cost more than £1bn in new transfers.
