Barcelona have shown off their new first captain on social media, following the departure of the last skipper, Sergio Busquets. Sergi Roberto will be the go-to for the captain’s armband, as the longest serving player, having joined Barca’s youth academy in 2006.
Everyone knew the day was coming, but it’s finally here. Following the departure of club veterans Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets earlier this summer, someone was going to have to step up on take on the captain’s armband following the latter’s exit.
Now, for the first time, Barcelona have shown off their skipper, Sergi Roberto on social media, posting a tweet on their Catalan Twitter account, with a photo of Roberto and a caption that reads “First day as first captain“.
The Spaniard is a veteran of the club, having first joined their youth academy way back in 2006. The 31-year-old has played nearly 350 matches for the senior team, and was the natural succession for the club, as he was second captain under Busquets.
He has accumulated a staggering 27 trophies in his time with Barca, including seven La Liga titles, six Spanish Super Cups and two Champions League titles. Despite having a more minor role in the team in recent seasons, he is still a mainstay of the Camp Nou, and signed a contract extension for another season with the Catalans.
